     Glow Group is committed to having a sustainable relationship and maintaining prudent standards on the Environment, Occupational Health and Safety (EH&S) Management System including the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to local communities, interested parties and government authorities.


Glow Group is one of the world’s most efficient and environmentally friendly power plants. The Operational performances will always meet the required local statutory environmental limits as well as the most stringent international regulations.

Advanced and proven emission control system and reduction facilities as well as the best available technology using the highly supercritical pulverized coal boiler technology, a high efficiency boiler system that consumes less fuel than conventional boilers, has been used on the new expansion projects. This minimizes all emission levels of nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and dust to meet Thai environmental standards and to ensure quality of life for the local people.

Glow Group takes into account the importance of the Environmental Management System (EMS) and the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSAS) and directs the operational efforts towards achieving those EMS and OHSAS requirements. n. In 2000, Glow Energy Public Company Limited has been accredited on the Environmental Management System or ISO 14001 from the third party and it has continually maintained such management standard until the present time. In addition, the power plants under Glow Energy such as Glow SPP1, Glow SPP2, Glow SPP3, Glow Energy Phase 4, Glow Energy Phase 5 and Glow IPP have internally followed the ISO 14001 management system. Glow SPP11 and GHECO-One which are the companies under Glow Group have also been certified by ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 accordingly. The corporate EMS and OHSAS operational procedures have been developed and standardized to be used among those power plants.

Furthermore, Glow Group undertakes the relevant procedures and provides an environmental monitoring program to monitor, control and implement with regards to air quality, wastewater quality, marine ecology, noise, coal and ash management, water and natural resources consumption, energy consumption as well as industrial waste management and biodiversity management pursuant to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) report continually, in order to ensure that all employees, the neighboring plants and the surrounding communities have safe working environment and have good quality of life.


Emission Compliance

     Glow Group has successfully implemented its air emission reduction program in accordance with the resolution from the National Environmental Board (NEB) based on “bubble concept (80:20)” to control NOx and SO2 emissions at Glow SPP3 where located in the same boundary nearby GHECO-One. Prior to expanding or building a new power plant, the government set an 80:20 measure to reduce NOx and SO2 emissions from the existing facilities, so that the new project can be realized. That means NOx and SO2 emissions of the new project shall not exceed 80% of the amounts reduced. Implementing this program allowed new power plants of Glow Group, including GHECO-One coal-fired supercritical boiler plant, to be constructed.

     GHECO-One Power Plant is designed and operated in line with international standards, using high quality coal and state-of-the-art and environmental friendly technology, including NOx, SO2 and dust emission control and reduction facilities and the use of Supercritical Pulverized Coal Boiler Technology, a high efficiency boiler system that consumes less fuel than conventional boilers, thus minimizing all emissions. Also the fact that some of the Glow’s existing utilities and infrastructures can be used consequently reduces environmental impact.

     Glow is also the first private power company in Thailand to install an Air Emission Signboard, which displays real time air emission data of NOx, SO2 and dust compared to standards, at the main gate in front of Glow SPP3 and Glow SPP12. We have also installed the ambient air quality monitoring station in local community near the power plant in order to measure and display the real time ambient air quality and to ensure that the environmental management has been strictly followed and in a transparent manner in compliance with the applicable environmental standards.

Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
     Sulfur Dioxide is generated by coal combustion process from the coal-fired power plants such as Glow SPP3 (CFB1&2), Glow Energy CFB3 and GHECO-One. Formation of SO2 emission is minimized by using the imported high-quality bituminous coal with sulfur content less than 1% and by employing a Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler (CFB) in which limestone is injected and compromised of Seawater Flue Gas Desulfurization (SWFGD) for SO2 removal before releasing flue gas into the atmosphere through air emission stacks. These will help minimize SO2 emissions to meet the EIA, EHIA as well as the operational requirements. SO2 emissions are measured by using Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMs), installed at all exhaust stacks of power plants.

Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)
     Nitrogen Oxide is produced whenever the combustion temperature is high. Therefore, one of the methods of reducing NOx emissions from both the Glow SPP3 hybrid block generating facility and GHECO-One is to control the combustion temperature using the low NOx burner to meet the operational requirements. One of the advantages of a Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler (CFB) is that the combustion temperature is relatively low. In GHECO-One, coal is pulverized before it is injected into high efficiency boiler using low NOx burners designed for optimum combustion and temperature that results in low NOx emission, which the hot gas from combustion in the boiler will be passed through a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for further NOx Therefore, NOx emissions associated with the combustion process are low.

     For facilities utilizing natural gas as primary fuel, Glow Group employs advanced technology to reduce NOx formation in the combustion process, which occurs at temperatures higher than in a CFB boiler. Combustion temperature can be reduced by injecting water or steam into the combustion chamber. In addition, NOx emissions are also minimized by employing the latest state-of-the-art Dry Low NOx burners. Such burners are designed specifically to minimize NOx emissions.

     Glow Group has installed the best available technology to control and minimize dust emission, for instance installation of closed coal conveyor system, sprinkler system for water spraying at coal pile and wind wall of 15-m height at coal pile. In the combustion process, hot gas from coal combustion chamber will be contaminated with ash and dust which might be harmful to the operators and the working environment. Therefore, the equipment to collect dust emission has been installed, i.e. fabric filter for Glow SPP3 hybrid block generating facility, whereas GHECO-One has installed Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) for dust removal. This is the system which can effectively collect dust from coal ash up to 99.8 percent. All coal ash residues (fly ash and bottom ash) from the combustion process will be collected in the designated silos before being transported to the cement industry or ready mixed concrete industry where it will be used as a valuable raw material. Additionally, before the exhausting gas is emitted into the atmosphere via the stack, the amount of dust emission therewith will be measured by using Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMs) as well as in working areas and ambient air monitoring to ensure that it meet the local environmental standards.

Ambient Air Quality
     Ambient air quality is measured at the communities surrounding the power plants in accordance with the requirements of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) to prevent any adverse impact on the environment, local communities and society. This is performed bi-annually.


Wastewater Treatment System
     Glow Group endeavors to limit environmental impact from the use of oil and chemicals in the production and maintenance processes. Oil contaminated water is drained into an Oil Separator Sump where oil is separated and the oil-free water is being neutralized, then released to a retention pond and finally discharged into the public receiving water. Water quality is constantly monitored and recorded at the point of discharge in accordance with the requirements of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Health Impact Assessment (EHIA).

Water and Natural Resources
     Glow Group promotes and implements efficient water savings and proper use of natural resources in line with the National Energy Conservation Policy and the Enhancement and Conservation of National Environmental Quality Act B.E.2535, based on the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). This includes increasing the number of cycles of the once-through seawater cool?ing system, and improving the efficiency of the Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Treatment Unit.

     The power plants located in Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, Rayong Prov?ince, use seawater for the once-through seawater cooling system to reduce the demand of fresh water consumption from the main public reservoirs in Rayong Province. After passing through the process, the cooling water temperature stays well within the limit. Before being discharged, the cooling seawater will be released into the retention canal on the other side of the power plant to reduce the temperature of seawater. Discharging the seawater in this manner will ensure that the natural ecology is not harmed. Monitoring of marine life is performed in accordance with the requirements of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) and the Coastal Water Quality Standard.


Coal Handling
     High-quality bituminous coal with sulfur content less than 1% has imported and transferred from Glow SPP3’s Coal Port located in the Map Ta Phut Industrial Port by closed coal conveyor system to Glow SPP3’s and GHECO-One’s coal stockyard. Shipments of coal needed for power generation are delivered at the coal harbor using the company's own dedicated coal receiving facility. The transfer of the coal from the ship to the plant storage area is done by using an enclosed conveyor belt system. The coal is then further transported to the generating-unit intermediate storage silos by a similar enclosed conveyor belt system. This method prevents coal dust dispersion. In addition, dust suppression devices are installed at the transfer points along the coal-moving route to further minimize dust emission.

Ash Management
     With the combustion of coal, approximately 210,000 tons (1) of fly ash and bottom ash are expected to be generated every year. Coal ash contains calcium sulfate or basically known as gypsum. This by-product can be used for either construction or landfills. Bituminous coal ash has been recognized as a high quality coal ash which is widely used both in Thailand and worldwide.


Glow Group has established the Industrial Waste Management Procedure in compliance with legal requirements and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System to ensure that the operational control process of involved parties e.g. employees, temporary workers, contractors, suppliers, etc. for permission, collection, storage, and transportation for treatment and disposal of industrial waste and by-products that are generated from Glow Group activities are correctly performed to prevent any environmental impact.
Waste is classified into 3 categories as follows:
   ? Domestic Waste e.g. food, plastic bags and paper
   ? Non-hazardous Waste e.g. metal, synthesis rubber and clothes
   ? Hazardous Waste e.g. contaminated clothes, paint cans, light bulbs and used batteries

All types of waste must be separated and kept at the assigned areas.

In addition, Glow Group also conducts the internal audit in accordance with the ISO 14001 management system as well as strictly complies with the relevant laws and regulations relating to garbage and industrial waste management with aims to ensure that the Group has improved and developed the auditable management system continually, which will have good and sustainable improvements to the environmental management of the Group.
